Other Resources

There are so many amazing resources out there for photographers wanting to improve their business skills.  Here’s a couple that I’ve used in the past that you might find beneficial:

Go4Pro - Leah Remillet does a fabulous job talking about all aspects of running a business. Client gifts, welcome packets, social media, you name it.

Easy As Pie – Blog posts, e-books, mentoring. They also have a free Business 101 e- course to help you get started off on the right foot.

Business for Photographers – if you are local to Utah, this is definitely a MUST. Video courses, and now even a full-on workshop. Run by Greg Bishop (who has an MBA and a photographer wife), he really knows his stuff.

There you go – even more resources to help you run & maintain a successful business!! Stay tuned – I know we’ve been lacking in the blog post department lately, but we’ve got some great ones coming up!

SMUG’s

One of the tools I use for my business is SmugMug. I use SmugMug as a client gallery to show my clients their photos after the session. They are big, they look pretty, and SmugMug integrates pretty seamlessly with Lightroom which makes my workflow faster & easier. You can also customize your site to match your brand. My SmugMug site is here: http://client.picturememine.com/ Go on. Take a look.:)If you’re interested in having yours customized, shoot me an email and I’ll refer you to the awesome Joel Jensen who did mine.

One of the great things about SmugMug is they are all about making you a better photographer, as well as encouraging networking among communities. To that end, they have organized SMUGs – or SmugMug User Groups. These meetings are held once a month & have a range of topics. The best part is that WE choose the topics! You totally have input. What do you want to learn? Who do you want to hear from? Plus, we have an AMAZING group of photographers here in Utah. Some of my best friends have come from networking with the local community.

So, want to learn more about SmugMug?  Want to meet local photographers and network? The Utah County Group meets every 2nd Tuesday (except for Feb 2012 cause its Valentine’s Day – date is TBD). Details can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/Utah-County-SmugMug-User-Group/ You can also join the Meet-up group and get emails about upcoming events.

You can also follow the group on Twitter here: http://twitter.com/#!/UTCountySMUG

Here’s an awesome time lapse video of our Dec 2011 meet-up by Jeremy Hall (click to view), and a few photos from January 2012 by moi. We had a 2 month discussion on light modifiers & portrait set-ups, and it culminated in an open shooting night!

Building a Blog – your online presence

I thought this would be a great time for another business tip! Today I’m going to talk about my BLOG. Excited yet? There are currently two well-known platforms to build your blog on: blogger.com & wordpress.com. Mine is built on wordpress.com – and I upgraded so that I could use the direct URL feature (blog.picturememine.com instead of blog.picturememine.wordpress.com). Its cleaner & much easier for your clients to find -which can lead to more bookings for you, right?!

Once I created my wordpress account, I bought a ProPhoto blog theme. You install ProPhoto as a .zip file just like you would any other theme, and from there it is SUPER easy to customize your blog however you’d like. I began with one of their “starter themes” just to give me some initial direction, and then just went crazy from there.

This is what the Customize Screen looks like. From here you can customize anything about your blog – what your header looks like, your menu items, what is it in your contact form, how you want your galleries to display, font size, you name it!

A couple of things I LOVE about ProPhoto

1. My pictures look fabulous! I can upload them up to 900px wide and they will display that large (I choose to actually go 800px wide though). You can also upload your photos into “galleries” which make them super easy to organize and then just add to your post.

2. Flexibility to change at any time. You want to keep your overall brand the same so it is recognizable, but maybe you just want to freshen things up a bit. Super easy!

3. Tutorials for everything! Questions about how to install your theme? How to host your blog so that prophoto will work correctly? What are grids and how do I use them? The ProPhoto website has tutorials that will walk you through how to do pretty much everything. Plus, their customer support is also FABULOUS! Great guys, fast response, and super helpful.

For not that great an expense, you can have a professional looking blog that helps your photos look AMAZING! To add to that – you can get $10 off your purchase by using the link here. So, what are you waiting for!? Time to spice up your blog!

CHANGES to the workshop – paying it forward

Trust me … you’ll want to read to the end of this post.:)

Years ago I was shooting a wedding and waiting outside for the couple. A few of us photographers started chatting and it came up they knew my father – another long-time photographer. He had since retired … but apparently he was well known by a few of them there. One relived a memory of when she was shooting her first wedding a few years back and she felt unsure of what sequence to shoot groups. He gladly offered assistance, sensing her anxiety. Another photographer said he randomly gave him $20 to eat ice cream after the wedding … because “they’d need a break from shooting!”:)That was SO my dad!:)But the kindest thing I heard was what I needed to hear right then. And now.   The story goes that 20+ photographers were waiting in the early spring for their couples to emerge from the temple. One by one each couple came out, followed by the photographer shooting away to capture their big day! Happy smiles and laugher reigning supreme on such a momentous day! Except one couple. Their photographer hadn’t shown up. A BIIIIIG NO NO, obviously. They waited – and waited. Couple after couple emerging. Until nearly everyone was done. My dad was still waiting for his couple – the last of the morning. They were taking longer than he expected – so he took advantage of the wait. He kindly walked over to the couple who DIDN’T have a photographer and told them HE would shoot their wedding. Obviously no strings attached. With tears of gratitude they smiled for picture after picture. He popped the rolls of film out and gracious handed them over.

He never said a word. To anyone. But these photographers told me because they had heard about it. It apparently had made the rounds. And hopefully changed some hearts.

This has got us thinking. And we’ve decided to change things up a bit for our workshop. We, too, would like to pay it forward to photographers. Instead of gathering you all together, spending gobs of money on a luncheon, booklet, website/forums, etc etc … we’ve decided to minimize. In hopes that we can offer it to everyone who would like to be there. Because who are we to not pay it forward? Who are any of us to withhold in kindness where we could freely give?

THE CHANGES – that EXCITE US!!!!  ……

The 2 workshops will change into one offered class. Saturday, March 24th from 12:00-3:00 p.m in the greater Salt Lake area (exact location TBD by class size). It will be simplified in that there won’t be lunch provided, nor a booklet … we need to keep our costs down to offer it this way. But what you will walk away with is the same information in a condensed 3 hour powerful class for only $150. Yes. $150. That’s it.

We will open the registration THIS WEDNESDAY, January 18th.  Registration will ONLY be open for 10 days. After Saturday, January 28th at 11:59 midnight, the registration is closed. We will not be taking any other registration after this date. So … we suggest you gather any and all you know to let them know about this.:)We will determine the exact location in the coming days – but it will be in greater Salt Lake City, UT area. And remember … those located in Davis County can call the DATC and receive money back if you are a business owner. Any continuing education classes receive reimbursement from the DATC. Call them for details.

There is no maximum number of attendees – so tell your friends – but there is  a minimum of 20 people in order for the class to fly. So, tweet about it, post it on facebook, get the word out. In FACT – Let’s offer up a contest for a FREE seat at the class. To earn entries you can:

erica kirby - um, I facebooked it… I mentioned that already, but here’s my other entry :) ps we need to get together again!January 17, 2012 – 9:17 pm

Shaylee Droubay - I struggle with people not taking me seriously because of my age, or my status in school, or because we’ve grown up together. They judge based off little facts when they haven’t even looked at my images. If they don’t like my style, that is fine, I want them to be happy. But to assume that I don’t produce quality work because of my age, that’s completely different.

I posted a link to here on twitter.January 18, 2012 – 3:48 am
